Update: Crazy Bob Jones University Science Textbook: “Electricity is a Mystery.”

2010 September 6
by Religion Gone Crazy

This is a scanned page from a Christian science textbook published by Bob Jones University. Directly from the description of the book Science 4 (2nd ed.) for teachers: “Explain God’s ordered world to your student through the study of the moon, light, electricity, area and volume, simple machines, digestion, animal defenses, trees, erosion, and simple classification of insects..”

We cringe to think of what the rest of the information in that book states!

Update:

It seems some people out there do not think this page is from a real Christian school “science” textbook. It is, very real, and the publisher acknowledges the page specifically and tries to explain it away. Feel free to check out some more pages from the book here. Pages 8-10 and 15 are especially crazy. Well ok, the whole book is insane and that’s why it’s on RGC!

Have you looked at the rest of the book? How about the preview of the book at the link you have? Looking that over, I’m beginning to suspect that “scanned page” is a fake.

It could very well be a fake. We haven’t seen the actual book itself or this page within. But we are willing to bet that it isn’t a fake, or far from the truth of what is in the book.

Sadly, it’s not a fake. I’m an Amazon.com book seller, and a few books from the BJU science series have passed through my hands. They came in a big lot of books that I got at a local auction, and they were so appalling that I destroyed them, rather than let them fall into the hands of children. The grade 4 book actually taught kids to ridicule the scientific method. The newest edition is better on the topic of electricity and magnets, and the infamous chapter on the origin of the moon is gone, but the series is still guaranteed to make homeschooled kids fail standardized tests. Even where the science is correct, the number of concepts covered is inadequate.
Sample pages from the new 5th grade science book:

By the 8th grade, it’s full-on lying about what science is: “Scientism has all the attributes of a false religion.”

We really do need to take another look at the right to free speech v. a child’s right to not be deceived and intellectually crippled.

What is the problem with this page? I studied from Bob Jones Curriculum for all of my school years. Can you explain where electricity comes from? I would much prefer to trust in a supreme Being than to try and understand it myself. it is an old textbook, anyway. We know a lot more about electricity than we did 20 years ago, when this book was published. If you have something against those that want to educate their children based on the first amendment of this country, you belong in Communist China

Actually, electricity can be explained. By doing a simple google search for “what is electricity” will yield many search results that will clearly explain it in simple terms such as this nice example of
electricity here. It really is not a mystery. The edition of the book is from the 1990′s – that is not very long ago and our study and knowledge of electricity has been ongoing since Benjamin Franklin in the 1800′s. The main problem with the textbook, is it explains away the natural world in such a simplified and false manner that it’s not doing any justice to the children who are forced to read and be taught from it. And in a simplified manner we mean “A supreme being” created it so that’s why it cannot be known. Unfortunately, this textbook is still being used even today to teach children. It is not benefiting the children and our society by making them ignorant to the true realities of the natural world. When you say things in the natural world can only be explained by the bible and a “Supreme Being” you’re definitely crazy, and therefore will be placed on Religion Gone Crazy, just like the book, and now yourself.

Perhaps you would be better served by using multiple streams of information rather than clinging to an inaccurate book that you feel the need to defend. It’s a textbook sweetie, not the scriptures. Bob Jones Press products are hardly perfect as indicated by some of the unfortunate grammar and punctuation they employ. Bob Jones is a dead racist. I’m not sure his followers’ publications are your best choice.
